Ally of the Month: Pepper Mint

Posted by Gravity On October - 8 - 2010

Our ally of the month for October is Pepper Mint. Pepper has been a local activist in the bi, poly, gender, and you-name-it scenes for many years. Pepper is a local polyamory organizer, educator, and social theorist. He writes about polyamory, organizes events including Love Triangle and Poly Speed Dating, and teaches non-monogamy workshops with his partner Jen. Pepper loves to go out to sex parties, Mission Control, the local dungeon, and goth clubs. You can read his writings at www.freaksexual.com.

What draws you to Mission Control?

P: I know everyone says this, but I’m going to say it again anyway: the two best things about Mission Control are the great people and the friendly atmosphere. There is a large rotating cast of characters, some of whom show frequently and others who pop in from time to time, ensuring a different party each time. I love that I can show up, meet some wildly dressed people, and have some great conversations with them.

I really appreciate the Mission Control tendency towards social engineering. The social space of the MC parties is consciously designed, and continually and creatively evolving. Sometimes this means following people’s tastes, such as the recent addition of a cross in the kink room. Other times it means doing some ongoing work, like the purposeful work of introducing new people and helping them adapt to a sex party atmosphere.

What are your thoughts about sex-positive community events?

P: I am constantly asking myself this question in regards to my own polyamory organizing: do we actually need polyamory events? What purpose do they serve? Can folks get along well enough just by meeting cool people in the bay area?

I’ve decided that it is crucial to hold this sort of event, especially as a landing pad for new folks. Sex-positive people of various sorts can be isolated, lacking support or connection with others like them. When we hold rowdy fun events and invite them, it provides a starting point for exploring the amazing sexual underground here. In order to draw people in, it’s very important that the MC events and my own events have a visible public presence: websites, announcements, flyers, and so on.

For those of us who have been around longer, coming together in numbers is a celebration. We get to see new people and meet old friends. We party it up in a rarified atmosphere where others are not surprised by our sexual proclivities. We get to do things that you can only do in large groups, like filling a room with writhing bodies. It is incredibly valuable. In the last year I’ve rediscovered just how much fun this scene can be, and this prompted me to become a Mission Control Alliance member.

You are so active in the poly/kink community.  Tell us what is new for you?

P: It’s hard to judge, but I think the sex-positive community in San Francisco has been growing in size. In my own polyamory organizing efforts, I have been moving from holding smaller dinners and discussions to larger social events. I am particularly proud of Love Triangle, a non-monogamous goth/80′s dance club night that has been averaging two hundred people. I’ve never seen so many polyamorous people in one place before!

I have also been very excited about our growing Poly Speed Dating events. The last one was the largest ever, and a lot of people walked away with some good prospects. But I’m looking to hold even larger events. I’m hoping to put together a polyamory/nonmonogamy conference in San Francisco in the next couple of years.

Violet Blue Blogs About MC

Posted by Gravity On September - 13 - 2010

Author, blogger, and sex-positive pundit Violet Blue recently gave props to a couple of Mission Control projects, namely Kiss and the SanFranSexy magazine.

On her blog, Violet reviews a new movie produced by Private.com titled “An Open Invitation” which explores the ins and outs of non-monogomy and the swinging lifestyle. The movie follows the exploits of two couples which eventually leads them to the Upper Floor at Kink.com. The film utilizes real San Francisco couples. In fact, those couples are from Kiss.

And in another entry, Violet blue praises the new SanFranSexy magazine by saying, “Finally, a hip, warm and welcoming monthly magazine about sex in SF. Sleaze free, sophisticated, and more fun than a barrel full of sex kittens!”

Check out Violet Blues blog. It is certainly worth a book mark for anyone that wants to keep current on sex in the media and technology.

Love -Nancy Peach

Posted by Gravity On June - 14 - 2010
Local artist, Nancy Peach, has been exhibiting her erotic art since 2008. Her style has been described as pop art reminiscent of the graphic styles of the 60′s featuring bold lines and luscious, vivid colors on over-sized canvases.

A dozen of Nancy’s large and luscious paintings will adorn the walls of Mission Control. Every room will feature at least one piece. Come out and explore the magic that these sensual images bring to each space they inhabit. We open this exhibit June 26th at Kinky Salon’s Pride celebration of creativity, diversity and perversity – the Kinky Salon San Fransexual Celebration!

Nancy took a few minutes from her busy schedule to answer our Love of the Week questionnaire:
Where are you originally from? What is your favorite thing about the City? Nancy Peach: I am from Nova Scotia, Canada. I came to San Francisco after ending up in Alaska. I came her because my younger sister was living here and she was diagnosed with Aids in 1992. My favorite thing is to create art and hang with my children.

What is your connection with Mission Control? NP: I attended Mission Control after an opening of my enormous painting unveiling at the San Francisco Armory. My first impression was that I would like to hang my art in Mission Control and I have made arrangements to hang for 6 months.

What’s a typical day at work like for you? NP: My typical day at work is to paint in oils on canvas. I eat, sleep and dream about making art. After I take my children to school I come home and paint for hours until they return.

What is your favorite type of work? What do you find most rewarding? NP: My favorite type of work is producing erotic artwork. Mostly because it is rewarding to create from the wonderful models that I have to paint. I love to create large luscious figurative work as it is so freeing. I do hope to someday get a studio where my children’s little eyes aren’t a concern so I can paint some really graphic images.
For now my work is quite reserved as I need to be discreet with my children.

Thank you for your support of Mission Control.  Do you have any words of wisdom for the sex-positive community? NP: I have so enjoyed being welcomed into the Sex Positive Community. I love to play and be played with. I have an open relationship with my husband with all honesty that has happened over the past 2 years. I’m very new to the Sex Positive Community and I would recommend being as open as possible to all possibilities in your relationships. I am constantly learning more and being exposed to great people in this community. I love the rope bondage, suspension and the free creative explorations.

Check out a sample of Nancy’s works below. See her web site for more info or just come on out to Kinky Salon on June 26 and meet the artist herself.

Love- Madame Butterfly

Posted by Gravity On May - 24 - 2010

Next time you’re at Mission Control, keep an eye out for Madame Butterfly. Odds are you’ll find her happily tying up someone very lucky.

Where are you originally from? Madame Butterfly: San Francisco, Born and Bred, there aren’t that many of us.

What is your favorite thing about the City? MB: No one bothers you, pretty much no matter what you want to do, rarely do you get any shit about it from anyone here. So not only are you free to so what you really want, there is no impetus to go waaay out of your way to impress the masses as there is in other areas. No one cares what color your hair is so you can make it whatever color you really want even if that is fluorescent Green.  There is no need to outdo anyone or anything.

What is your connection with Mission Control? MB: I’m an Alliance member and happy party attendee.

Madame Butterfly is an expert at tying ropes and making them
When did you first attend? MB: My first experience was Speakeasy Japan with Midori and Kiyoshi, I loved tying a couple people to the stipper pole and felt that the party was very well run and friendly.

What is your main focus, talent, or skill? MB: I am a fiber artist who has been spinning yarn and knitting and weaving for years. I’m a rope top because I can look at a harness and know how to tie it easily. I can knit a sweater so tying up a person with one rope at a time is a piece of cake for me. I’m also a singletail top because I love the sound of a whip cracking and I’m just a teeny bit sadistic.

What’s a typical day at work like for you? MB: Spinning rope, dyeing rope and taking care of the paperwork necessary for my small business.

What is your favorite type of work? MB: Working with my hands. I tend to fidgety anyway so I usually have *something* in my hands all the time.

Thank you for your support of Mission Control.  Do you have any words of wisdom for the sex-positive community? MB: You should always have *something* in your hands, in your mouth, in your…

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mission Control?

Mission Control is volunteer-based and member-supported community center located in the heart of San Francisco. We host events and gatherings that co-create artistic, sensual, and social evolution. It is a place, a space and a people.

Founders Polly Superstar and Barron Scott Levkoff created Mission Control as a “petri dish” of social experimentation in January 2001. Nine years later to the day on January 1st 2010, after almost a decade of building community in the space, they handed over running Mission Control to the community itself, and from there we have blossomed into a nexus of San Francisco’s diverse and ever changing creator culture.

As an organization, Mission Control is home to special gatherings open to our members and volunteers, with the aim of creating creative connections between people, both within and across a diverse group of communities.

You can become involved with Mission Control by expressing yourself honestly and openly while at the same time remaining open and respectful of the thoughts, creations, and efforts of others.

The Mission Control organization was created by the community through a series of meetings and work groups using the Beauty Engine model. As of January 2010, Mission Control is a membership supported community organization governed by an elected board and run by a dedicated volunteer crew. The Board is made up of nine key leaders including the original founders, Polly and Scott.

Is Mission Control the same as Kinky Salon?

Mission Control, the long time home of gatherings like Kinky Salon, Club Kiss and Pink, is taking off as a community in its own right. Mission Control will continue to be home for a variety of creative, open hearted, and sex positive events. Kinky Salon still calls Mission Control home.
